Larry Akers

Sculpture, Digital, Mixed Media

Fluid, pattern-based imagery is the common denominator is almost all of Akers' work. Using layered, patterned, refractive, or reflective materials, color, and light, he creates kinetic sculptures whose only moving part is the viewer. He creates feasts for visual perception, free of interpretative baggage and appealing to everyone's childlike impulse to grok the unusual. The viewer is challenged to understand, with accessible visual and geometric concepts, how its images can animate, appear to float free from their materials, and present cognitively imposed illusions.

Look ever closer and by doing so, become part of the artwork through your unique internal manipulation of it. Through your examination, you will ultimately better understand both the artworks and the relationship between vision and cognition.

Larry Akers has been doing constructed sculpture in Austin, Texas since 2011. Raised in Pampa, Texas, he escaped to Austin in 1973 and acquired several mathematics and computer science degrees at UT. Over a 40 year career he worked in formal methods for computing, artificial intelligence, and software engineering, acquiring an affinity for pattern that infuses his artwork.
